GLSEN has 3 committees you can volunteer for: Student Organizing, Professional Development and Development.


Student Organizing Committee

Purpose: Facilitate program planning, work with youth in their leadership and program planning development and support LGBTQ youth through creative programs.

Roles

  • Program Planner: Collaborate with LGBTQ youth and community partners to develop programs for LGBTQ youth across Washington State.
  • Organizer: Assist with the details of planning multiple programs and provide support to committee chair.
  • Jumpstart Program Liaison: The Jumpstart program works directly with K-12 school’s gay-straight alliance clubs. Provide support, assistance, and encouragement of GLSEN programs.

Professional Development and Summit Committee

Purpose: Provide safe space training, resource distribution, and consultations with K-12 teachers, staff administrators, and community partners.

Roles

  • Trainer: Facilitate trainings with teachers, staff administrators, and community partners using the safe space kit and GLSEN materials.
  • Organizer/Outreach: Assist committee chair with organizing trainings, finding a trainer to facilitate and develop partnerships with schools and communities for future trainings.

Summit: Support students and educators in developing skills to create safe schools through workshops and networking opportunities.

Roles:

  • Summit Planner: Assist the Summit organizer board member with the planning, development and coordination of GLSEN WA annual leadership student focus conference summit(s).

Development Committee

Purpose: Raise finances through fundraising, grants, and sponsorships to support GLSEN programming and GLSEN committees.

Roles

  • Grant Writing: Grants will be used mostly to support educational summits and professional trainings throughout each year.
  • Fund Raising Events: We do several fundraising events each year. We are looking for volunteers interested in developing and implementing successful fundraising events.
  • Coroporate Fundraising-we are looking for volunteers with experience in corporate fundraising and development to help us expand this area.

GLSEN Washington State provides training and resources to students, educators and community partners to make Washington schools more inclusive for all students.

GLSEN WA is a volunteer-run organization, meaning every success we have is credited to the dedication of our amazing volunteers. We would not be able to achieve our mission without the passion for equality that underlies the thousands of volunteer hours that are committed each year. It is thanks to their leadership that we are able to do what we do:

  • Provide resources to any educator or student in the state of Washington who requests one

  • Connect with students to build leadership opportunities

  • Provide Professional Development to Educators to make their schools more inclusive

  • Support districts with creating inclusive policies

  • Present an annual conference for educators and students to create space for learning, leading, and networking
