Mission Statement

GLSEN is the leading education organization creating safe and inclusive K-12 schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

Description

At GLSEN, we want every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow.

GLSEN Washington State provides training and resources to students, educators and community partners to make Washington schools more inclusive for all students.

GLSEN WA is a volunteer-run organization, meaning every success we have is credited to the dedication of our amazing volunteers. We would not be able to achieve our mission without the passion for equality that underlies the thousands of volunteer hours that are committed each year. It is thanks to their leadership that we are able to do what we do:

  • Provide resources to any educator or student in the state of Washington who requests one

  • Connect with students to build leadership opportunities

  • Provide Professional Development to Educators to make their schools more inclusive

  • Support districts with creating inclusive policies

  • Present an annual conference for educators and students to create space for learning, leading, and networking

I love volunteering with GLSEN! The people are great and they provide really important resources and programs to LGBTQ youth in Washington!

GLSEN serves an important need in the community. They support LGBTQ students and their allies as well as the educators in schools. They support GSA type clubs and do trainings for educators. GLSEN has changed their volunteer structure to a format that supports collaboration and teamwork. Thanks or all of the work that you do!

GLSEN Washington is entirely volunteer ran, and that creates a passionate and cooperative environment to try and effect meaningful change. There is a lot of opportunity to do something truly meaningful without feeling consistently held back. They try to innovate and create change through empowering their volunteers to step up and do something big. I have gained so much experience volunteering with GLSEN Washington, had the opportunity to assist and empower youth, and have made many valuable connections with community members. I just hope I can continue to volunteer and be part of everything that GLSEN Washington stands for and does.

I attended a training meeting and volunteered to work in the office. I was first requested to come into the office on 4/19, but that was cancelled without explanation. I then signed up for 1-3 on 4/22/2013 but when I showed up at the office I was told there is nothing to do in the office and that they have no need for office volunteers. GLSEN's mission statement includes that the notion that all people should be valued and respected, but they do not value or respect the talents and time of those who volunteer. This might be a good organization for students, but it is likely to be a huge disappointment to professionals who want to offer their time and talent.
