ORGANIZATION: SR3 Sealife Response, Rehab and Research

Looking to use your human resources or administrative skills to help a nonprofit? Soundside is seeking an individual with prior experience in management, human resources or administration to contribute to our volunteer program. This volunteer opportunity will provide you with the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to grow the organization that will build Washington’s first Marine Animal Hospital. The Volunteer Coordinator supervises volunteers and provides direction, coordination and consultation for all volunteer functions and programs. One of your key roles is matching the skills, experiences and expectations of volunteers to available opportunities. You will provide ongoing support to our volunteers and become their main point of contact.

Essential Functions

  • Organizes, coordinates and manages the recruitment of volunteers.
  • Develops and implements training programs for all volunteers.
  • Maintains database and keeps updated records on all volunteers (Excel and Constant Contact).
  • Sets up and attends volunteer meetings. Reports to staff on volunteer activities as needed.
  • Recommends and develops ongoing volunteer utilization.
  • Develops and implements a volunteer recognition and appreciation program.

Desired Skills/ Experience

  • Outreach/ Public Education/ Presentation experience.
  • Excellent time management, organizational and planning skills.
  • Proficiency with Word and Excel. Willing and able to learn new software programs.
  • The ability to communicate with, supervise and empower volunteers to be effective in their roles--experience with volunteers preferred.
  • The ability to work cooperatively with different types of personalities.
  • Willingness to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of the job.
  • Ability to effectively manage a wide array of tasks, projects, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to work productively in an unstructured environment with minimal supervision.

Work Environment and Expected Hours

This flexible position allows you to work in the comfort of your own home and within an office setting as needed. You will visit off site venues and outside event areas in various weather conditions. The Volunteer Coordinator reports directly to the Board President, who is responsible for his/her performance evaluations.

A minimum time commitment of 3-5 hours per week with variable days and hours is expected. We prefer a commitment of 6 months or more due to the extensive training and time invested.

Physical Demands

Must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.

Description

SR3 Sealife Response, Rehab, and Research is the first of its kind non-profit in Washington dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of marine wildlife in the Pacific Northwest. SR3 is a collaborative effort with NOAA, the University of Washington, SeaDoc Society, and more to provide the first and much needed dedicated marine wildlife rehabilitation and science facility in Washington. The facility will also serve as a research and teaching institute to tackle big ocean health issues while helping future generations learn to care for our oceans. Currently SR3 is actively responding to injured/stranded marine wildlife, disentangling marine animals, monitoring local killer whale health and world whale health, researching Sea Star Wasting Disease, and mentoring students.
