FOTAS needs volunteers to walk, train and socialize the dogs and play with the cats at the Aiken County Animal Shelter. The homeless shelter animals are eager for love and attention from kind volunteers, and are better able to handle the stress of the shelter environment when they have had some exercise and attention. As a result of this extra care, the animals are more appealing to potential adopters.
Since FOTAS got involved in 2009, the County Shelter's euthanasia rate has dropped from 95% to 69%. Each year, FOTAS saves more and more animals because of its volunteer program.

Description
FOTAS supplements the Aiken County Animal Shelters resources to ensure that the 4800 animals that pass through the shelter every year have an opportunity to find a forever home. FOTAS volunteers walk and socialize dogs, play with the cats, work with trainers to make the animals more adoptable and assist at the County shelter in many capacities.
FOTAS also organizes foster care and off-site adoptions and transfers to no-kill shelters in other parts of the Country.
It holds special events, like Woofstock, a Dog, Cat and Music Festival or the Play Fore the Animals Golf Tournament, to raise funds to provide for supplemental food, medicines, toys, leashes, collars and other essential and much needed items to care for the animals.
FOTAS also has developed and implemented low cost spay/neuter services in targeted hotspot areas of the County.
