Help our students achieve fluency in English! Volunteers will be matched with an individual ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) student based on student-volunteer mutual availability. By providing extra language practice for a student in Riis Settlement's ESOL class, you will help them achieve improved English fluency for social and professional use. Study materials will be provided by the Immigrant Services department.
Founded in 1888 by visionary social reformer, Jacob A. Riis, the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House is a community based non-profit organization that offers comprehensive services to the youth, adults, seniors and families of Western Queens. Our mission is to build and strengthen communities in Western Queens and act as a catalyst for change. Riis Settlement works to support individuals who reside in the Queensbridge and Ravenswood Houses and the overall Western Queens community as they build productive and self-sufficient lives. Through the three program areas whose activities are described inside, we provide vital services to over 450 people a day and approximately 10,000 during the course of the year.
