DAHMW was founded in October 2000 initially to assist the overlooked and under-served male victim of intimate partner violence, yet has since developed to offer support to ALL victims in need. Our virtual agency provides a 24/7 Crisis & Information Helpline operated solely by our supportive, caring Volunteer Helpline Advocates who furnish each caller with individual crisis support and/or intervention, education, safety planning, and referrals to local resources of shelters, legal aid and/or individual/group counseling. Each new volunteer must first complete our comprehensive, on-line DAHMW-Certified Training Program in Domestic Violence Advocacy and Support before volunteering any time and working with callers. Our Training Program incorporates topics of:

  • Detailed overviews and definitions of many different types of domestic abuse
  • Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) against men and women
  • Domestic violence within heterosexual and LGBT relationships
  • Domestic abuse of children, the elderly and disabled persons
  • Effects of family violence on children
  • Teen dating violence, stalking behavior and threat assessment
  • Safety planning and referring to appropriate local resources
  • Working with victims on our 24/7 Crisis & Information Helpline
  • Boundaries, communication, empowerment and discrimination
  • Relevant legal and social issues
  • Participation in mock (practice/pretend) calls before working first shift on Helpline
  • Follow-up support and on-going continuing education

DAHMW has a critical need for a Recruitment & Training Assistant (RTA). Our RTA shall work under the direct supervision of both the Intake & Training Coordinators to assist with DAHMW’s volunteer recruitment & retention programs, in addition to helping out with our training program. This newly-created position has considerable potential to develop and/or expand into a vast array of volunteer opportunities, of which will primarily be determined by such expertise, competence and interest exhibited by the specified individual who is appointed.

As a sampling of responsibilities, DAHMW’s RTA will research, identify, submit for approval and log web-sites and public places that may be appropriate to post recruitment ads; post recruitment ads of volunteer opportunities; compose drafts of volunteer job descriptions; respond to applicant inquiries; forward Volunteer Application Packets to interested candidates; conduct initial screening of applicants to recommend interviews; maintain current Excel log of all volunteer applicant activity; type variety of documents for recruitment files; upload files to DAHMW’s Intake Yahoo Group in a timely manner; take part in applicant interviews, and assist Training Coordinator with a wide assortment of training activities and functions, contingent upon RTA’s demonstrated capabilities.

Ideal candidates will have a computer with Internet access, be able to work 6-12 hours/week, be available for weekly teleconferences (1 hour/week) and mandatory monthly staff meetings (1-2 hours/month). The successful RTA will enjoy working with all types of people, possess excellent interpersonal skills, be detailed-oriented and extremely organized. The RTA will also be a self-starter, able to work independently within given guidelines, display obvious resourcefulness and take the initiative whenever appropriate. Some recruitment and/or administrative experience is helpful. Moderate to advanced experience with Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint is an absolute must.

To begin a rewarding new chapter in your life and to receive our Volunteer Application Packet, please write to Nichole, DAHMW's Training Coordinator, at TrainingCoordinator@Dahmw.org.
