Random Acts of Kindness Week
Have you noticed how being nice is all the rage these days?

It's true: Between nice books, political adversaries making nice, and even nice new TV ads, we know a trend when we see one -- and luckily this is one we all can enjoy.

This week you can expect even more nice things in your community during Random Acts of Kindness Week from February 12-18.

The idea of RAKW is to do a simple thing to improve the lives of others. Take your neighbor's garbage out, put change in a stranger's expired parking meter, or take flowers to the local nursing home. When you help others, you help yourself, too. So pay it forward and you'll be repaid in kind... literally!

The Random Acts of Kindness website has tons of great ideas on how to be nice this week. And consider volunteering for a cause you care about! That's an act of kindness we can all get behind. Visit VolunteerMatch!

Who Are You?

Be Our Valentine
Open Your Heart & Give Back
Forget the chocolates -- give back with community service this Valentine's Day and support a cause you love. Here are just a few of our favorite ways to make a Big Hearted difference at VolunteerMatch:
  • Roses are red, but they need your help to stay that way: The City of Ventura, CA, needs Rose Garden

  • You can do more than just give chocolates this year: the Lee County Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross needs Chocolate Tasting Volunteers.

  • Bringing a bouquet on Valentine's Day? Adult Day Care Center of Lynchburg, VA, needs "Flowers for Our Friends" Volunteers.

  • Everyone likes to have something nice to wear on Valentine's Day, including disadvantaged girls: Becca's Closet of Pompano Beach, FL, needs Formal Gown Volunteers.

  • Oysters make a popular appetizer on February 14, and you can help ensure a supply for future romantics: Save the Bay of Oakland, CA, needs Oyster Monitor Volunteers.

  • Valentine's means hugs and kisses, so why not send some to soldiers deployed overseas? Make handmade items for military families with The HUGS Project of Edmond, OK, as a Hugs Volunteer.
At VolunteerMatch, these and 38,785 additional ways to make a difference are available right now. Put your heart into it: Get involved and give back.

Volunteer Spotlight
Katie Lee, Hope4KidZ, Inc.
An attorney specializing in public interest law, Katie Lee has always tried to do good work. For the past two years, however, some of the work she's most proud of has nothing to do with her practice.

As a volunteer with Hope4KidZ, Inc., Lee is charged with recruiting others like her to help orphaned children. Now, instead of preparing briefs or responding to judicial requests, she's in charge of her first MySpace page and worrying where the organization's website should be hosted.

Hope4KidZ believes that children in state foster care deserve to be safer than they were before they were removed from their homes, and the organization educates foster children and their caretakers about their rights.

"Foster children, who are often teetering in limbo, are one of the most vulnerable groups and forgotten groups in our society," Lee said. "I've heard the horror stories, so I was very interested in getting involved and learning more."

Lee found Hope4KidZ at VolunteerMatch while home sick one day. After registering, she responded to a Hope4KidZ opportunity and was quickly contacted by the organization. "We somehow managed to understand exactly what the other was looking for," she said. "The rest, as they say, is history!"

You can make history, too, when you find a volunteer opportunity on VolunteerMatch. Get involved today.
