  • Homelessness prevention simulation, CrowdDoing

    This is a virtual opportunity
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

CrowdDoing is recruiting volunteers to help us simulate homelessness prevention. Homelessness Prevention Simulation: Thesis: Home buyers today buy 100% of a home, and borrow money through a mortgage to be able to afford to do so. But this purchase masks the fact that they are buying two things at the same time- 100% of the future sale price of a home (so-called appreciation value), and 100% of the usage rights of that home while they are living there (so-called use value). If people could buy only the percentage of appreciation value that they can afford, and still secure stable access to a home, half of homelessness in dense, coastal urban regions such as the Bay Area, New York, Seattle could be prevented. Stanford University has piloted such a model for decades by allowing professors to buy 100% of the use value of their off-campus home and 50% of the appreciation value of their home. This program has allowed individual professors to have asset diversification, access to housing, and an affordable share of the growth in the appreciating market value of their home. Through this program, Stanford University has created access to housing for professors without grant dollars or housing tax credits in a difficult housing market. Stanford’s endowment has earned returns on this investment comparable to the rest of Stanford endowment investments. The extension of this kind of alternative financing-- investing in a portion of appreciation value per home-- could make possible zero-subsidy affordable housing for preventing homelessness and reducing super-commuting. In the Bay Area, jobs and housing creation are unbalanced. For the housing demand to be met, an added minimum of 275,000 homes are needed, available at price levels that neither impoverish nor displace working families. Until those homes are built, what solution might bring families with moderate incomes access to existing housing stock? The solution is to provide one part of our housing need solution by using a financial investment model based on the future appreciation of homes. Do you enjoy reading? Are you are a subject matter expert, educator, retired professional or just looking to use your voice to make a difference? Learning Ally needs voices to read high school and college level textbooks. Continue reading below to see if you are a good fit for this volunteer opportunity: Learning Ally is looking for volunteers to become textbook readers. These readers will join a community of virtual volunteers in creating audiobooks for students with learning differences. To become a reader, volunteers will need to go through an online training course, submit an audition and pass an equipment check before becoming a reader. Get started by completing 3-easy-steps on this link: https://learningally.org/Get-Involved/Volunteer-Step-1. The last step includes our fit quiz which helps put volunteers in the role that best suits them. We are currently looking for textbook volunteers only to read/record science, math, foreign language, and many more subjects. Once volunteers get through the fit quiz, we prefer they select the textbook training course. If you do not believe you fit the textbook role, feel free to explore our other opportunities. You can find more detailed descriptions of volunteer roles here: https://learningally.org/Get-Involved/Volunteer-Opportunities. For our younger volunteers: We have a minimum age requirement of 16 years for most roles. However, we have used younger narrators that have voice over or acting experience for specific titles, working through their parents. If volunteers are 16+ they can apply and take the fit quiz to see what role they would match up with best. If the volunteer is looking for short-term volunteering, we suggest having them do Quality Assurance.

  • The Green Walls Project - Virtual Weekly Writing Group

    This is a virtual opportunity
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

We are starting a new weekly writing group called The Green Walls Project, and we would love for you to be a part of it! We will be meeting virtually every Thursday from 3-4pm PST. No previous writing experience is necessary, and this time will count towards your community service hours if you are needing any. The Green Walls Project is a new way for teens and young adults to express whatever they’re feeling through their creativity, rather than through their pain. Being able to get our feelings out of our minds and onto something beautiful, like a story or a painting, is incredible. Each week will be an open session, so you can miss a session if you’re busy that week, and join in again the following week. There will be a different prompt every week, and we will be spending time writing and then sharing our pieces. If you live in Ventura County, we especially want to hear from you! It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Technical Writer Manager (Volunteer) *Note: The following is an opportunity for flexible, part-time, volunteer work. Please DO NOT APPLY if you are only looking for paid employment.* This is a remote-from-home position. Are you an experienced technical writer who is passionate about making a difference? Are you excited about the opportunity to work with smart and talented individuals committed to producing great content in the public interest? Can you commit a minimum of 10 hours a week, working remotely on your own schedule with our far-flung, diverse team? Check out WhoWhatWhy.org. You’ll quickly see that we’re a credible solution to the raging debate over whether the news is "fake" or not," with agenda-free research and bracingly fresh analysis. Not left-wing, not right-wing, not consensus-seeking. We just want the truth - whatever it is. We have thought long and hard about what limits journalism’s ability to effect positive change in the public interest, and we see two factors that dominate the landscape: (1) Commercial entities overly concerned with meeting financial goals and filling "eyeball" quotas - while keeping up with the rest of the pack, thereby ensuring a sameness and superficiality to the coverage (2) Ideologically driven outfits that cater to a specific mindset and dare not reveal things that would upset their readers - or force them to reconsider their values. At WhoWhatWhy, we go at each story with an open mind, boundless curiosity, and a willingness to dig deep and ask hard questions - even when we’re told not to. Nothing is going to stand in our way when it comes to discovering what is going on beneath the surface, and why. Call it naive to believe such fearlessness possible, but we think it’s the essence of true journalism. And because we’re straight to the point, we make clear that we’re looking for volunteers - skilled volunteers. Yes, we’re a nonprofit that wasn’t funded by a zillionaire. Yes, we decline to accept corporate ads. Yes, we have a tiny budget right now and simply don't have the ability to pay many people very much. However, we do have big ambitions - which is why we’re seeking experienced technical writer managers to help us better document our processes. That will play a crucial role in our ability to continue growing and sharing our quality journalism with an ever-expanding, eager audience. Responsibilities Develop and design the overall process of creating and maintaining technical documentation Prioritize tasks and lead the technical writing team Collaborate with other teams to design manuals, guides, release notes, etc. Produce high quality, easy-to-understand documentation. Edit, clarify and proofread documentation written by others Qualifications 7+ years of experience in technical writing, including team leadership and management Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and analytical skills Be highly organized, motivated, and curious, and able to juggle - and prioritize - multiple projects simultaneously Have a solid grasp of - and commitment to - our mission Demonstrate a collaborative spirit and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment Perks Channel your passion in a stimulating environment Learn the nuts and bolts of nonprofit operations in an up-and-coming organization Develop new skills and gain valuable experience that can enhance your professional trajectory Do amazing work on a flexible, part-time basis Have fun while you make a difference Expectations You will work remotely and on your own schedule; we require a minimum commitment of 10-15 hours a week. (Though doing more is not discouraged!) Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through Slack, email, and team members are requested to be highly responsive in a timely manner. If you possess a high level of self-motivation, work well independently but also have strong collaboration skills and enjoy the opportunity to partner with other senior leaders, and can commit quality time per week on a regular basis to help achieve team goals, we’d like to hear from you. To Apply We will not review applications that appear to be mass submissions. To apply, send your resume and a customized cover letter explaining why you're a good fit for this position. If there is no option to attach a cover letter, please send a cover letter to hr@whowhatwhy.org. You should confirm your understanding that this is, initially, a volunteer position. Thanks!
