  • Oxygen generation

    with ArdenVent
    This is a virtual opportunity
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

We are a non-profit organization building an infrastructure to develop, manufacture, distribute and operate remote-controlled ventilators and oxygen concentrators that will also gather high-resolution treatment data for scientific research and treatment optimization. As we learn more about the virus, the benefits of early oxygen support become more and more evident. Unfortunately, receiving oxygen at the moment requires you to go to a hospital. Many people especially in developing countries have either no access to these, can not afford the stay, or simply don't trust the system. This leads to tragic life long organ damage or even death that could have easily avoided by supplying a little bit of oxygen as early as possible. To not make cost or location an issue any longer we are working a small and low-cost oxygen concentrator which is to be distributed with the ventilator and is designed specifically for the COVID-19 scenario. Herefore we need the help of capable engineers that can read through existing research and existing designs independently, go back to the first principles and reconsider the parameters of existing designs to find a sweet spot where effectiveness for this specific application and cost-effectiveness are maximized. Minimal Requirements 2 years of work experience as a mechanical engineer Familiarity with physical Systems modeling Experience with Systems Design Capability to work in a small team without much supervision. 10h+ per week dedicated time

  • Innovative Control Systems Engineer

    with ArdenVent
    This is a virtual opportunity
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

In recent years there have been novel approaches to automating mechanical ventilation. The core idea is to intelligently regulate physiological variables (blood oxygenation etc.) rather than a physical variable (pressure, tidal volume). The development of this technology, however, is slow because communication protocols have only recently started to follow international standards necessary for inter-device control systems. To control physiological variables, many additional sensors have to be included. These devices all have medical grade certificates which are often unnecessary but bloat the cost of the devices to a level where physiological closed-loop control becomes simply impractical. Our Ventilator is designed to provide a doctor with all the information he might need to care for a patient, in the worst-case scenario even from home. Naturally, this opens up the door to physiological closed-loop control which will help take away work from the doctors and caregivers and really allow for safe remote control. We have several ideas on how such physiological closed-loop controls could be implemented but we lack the time to test our hypothesis and develop a proof of concept. We are therefore looking for a control systems engineer who can research whether public research on these concepts exists, realize a proof of concept or test such a system against simulation and of course, bring his/her own innovative ideas to the discussion. The advances in this field will contribute towards lowering the cost of mechanical ventilation beyond the pandemic. Minimal Requirements academic background in systems control 3+ years of work experience C++ coding skills (or can work closely with a C++ programmer to write the code for the Ventilator) 10h+ guaranteed weekly contribution Ideal Requirements 8+ years of work experience proficient in C++ and embedded systems development Experience with multi-dimensional and multi-level control systems Experience with Neural Networks

  • From Homeless to Housed! Help us fill it with household essentials and/or donate $200

    This is a virtual opportunity
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

It is a magic moment, when a DESC client is first handed the keys to their new home. After years of homelessness and huge barriers that include mental and addictive illness, this is the moment when each new resident fully understands that they have their own bed, their own bathroom and kitchen, and a key that locks the door. DESC and funding resources provide each apartment with a bed, table and two chairs, as well as a dresser. The apartment has a closet, bathroom and full kitchen. But imagine the new resident walking into their apartment with a backpack. Of course, they don't have sheets, blankets, kitchen and bathroom items. They still need these things to be a successful tenant. This is where we ask for your help, to "adopt" an apartment. Adopting an apartment costs about $200, though some people spend more, which is great. Your $200 goes toward buying everything a new resident would need including bedding, kitchen supplies, bathroom items, etc. Even better, we buy the items for you, getting the most of your contribution, and ensuring everyone has a brand new set of items to make their apartment feel like home. Please consider adopting one or more apartments. Please contact us if interested and we can provide more details and answer any questions you might have. More information about DESC and supportive housing can be found here: http://www.desc.org. Thanks for your consideration and support!
