  • React - Human Rights Testimony Database

    This is a virtual opportunity
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

In many places right now, people can be disappeared and hurt - often by the government - with no system of justice to stop it. Protestors in Hong Kong; Kurds in Syria; activists in Iraq - their stories may appear on social media, but they are not being collected systematically in one place except for a few prominent dissidents. The Uyghurs in particular are being disappeared into camps in huge numbers, and we have worked with some families and in cooperation with a dedicated person (Gene Bunin) who has created a database of their testimonies at http://shahit.biz . (he can also use help!) We are working to create a similar database for other regions, including Iraq, Syria, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and others. We have a small team of dedicated volunteers working on this project, the backend is in Go (Gorilla Toolkit) and the front end is in React. We have a lot of small things that still need to be done and would love help from anyone who is interested, we welcome fairly beginning coders but it would be important to know a little bit of Javascript/React. We checked the 'COVID-19' box as of course people who have been kidnapped or are in detention centers are at an increased risk of transmission, as well as the other dangers.

The Global Acupuncture Project (GAP) trains health-care providers in Uganda how to use a simple form of acupuncture to reduce pain and suffering and improve quality of life. We would like to create two apps. The first app is a way for those we train to be able to streamline their intake and treat selection process. Although anecdotally we know that the treatments have had a very significant impact on the local Ugandans, we need to collect data to objectively show how we are doing. So, the second app serves to help us collect data. We already have the research tool to gather the data, but we need to make it as easy and as simple as possible for our practitioners to use this tool and forward the data to us here in the United States. Because all of our practitioners in Uganda have cell phones, it seems that the easiest way to gather the data is via a phone app.

    This is a virtual opportunity
    Wed, July 15, 2020 - Fri, September 25, 2020

Each year, between 90-150 people from across the US and Canada attend The Children’s Music Network’s annual 3 day conference. There are spontaneous song swaps and networking, as well as structured workshops and presentations, a keynote address and special award ceremonies. Our project is to assemble the conference program guide that includes the schedule, program notes, and advertisements sold for the program into a booklet that will be folded, copied (B&W as color too expensive) and stapled. Last year’s program was 20 pgs ( 8.5 x 11 folded). We provide final copy and work in Google docs. The copy is then assembled into a PDF guide incorporating about 20 ads, The ads are sent to us as PDF’s, hopefully to the size specified in the Ad insertion document. Occasionally ad’s will need to be re-sized, or even created from a logo although this is not the norm. The conference this year begins October 2. We will have all the materials ready by mid-August and will need to have our guide ready to print by September 21
