The children of Colorado desperately need your help. In 2005, nearly 29% of Colorado's children ages 2-14 were overweight or at risk of being overweight. If current trends continue, 76% of all Coloradans
will be overweight or obese by 2020. This trend puts our children at great risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, poor self-esteem, depression, and poor school performance.
From an economic perspective, the annual obesity-related medical expenditures for adults are $874 million within the state of Colorado; of that $139 million is financed by Medicare and $158 million is financed by Medicaid. Therefore, $477 million is paid by private insurances or self pay. Imagine the future economic strain if we allow obesity to reach 76%. Businesses and individuals cannot sustain the high cost of health care for families.
We must stop the status quo with a proactive approach, and that is what Healthy Learning Paths does.

Healthy Learning Paths provides training for early childhood educators and teachers and education for parents, grandparents and children on the topics of wellness. We go into the schools with our Be Well, Learn Well program to teach children and parents about sleep, nutrition and activity and show teachers how easy it is to integrate wellness priciples into existing curricula. We provide free community outreach classes and events to the north Denver Metro communities on these topics as well, in order to ensure children receive the best start, not only for their health, but in order for them to learn and grow to their fullest potentials.
