Mission Statement

The mission of the Panhandle Butterfly House is to increase the public’s awareness of butterflies, pollinators and their important role in the environment.

Description

The Panhandle Butterfly House was founded by Jack and Fonda Wetherell in 1997. The exhibit was started as a cooperative program of the Santa Rosa Clean Community System, Inc., the UF/IFAS Cooperative Extension Service and the Navarre, Florida, Chamber of Commerce.

The PBH operates as a non-profit program of Keep Santa Rosa Beautiful, Inc. The Panhandle Butterfly House relocated to Milton, Florida in 2020 and reopened to the public in October 2023. We offer guided tours and school field trips from April through October on the native butterflies of Florida, pollinators, natural resources of Florida, and horticulture. There are numerous gardens and 1.4-mile Tiger Nature Trail through the Blackwater River floodplain ecosystem on the 9-acre property for visitors to explore. The main facilities are an 1870s restored Craftsman Bungalow formerly owned by Tom and Alice Jones and the 1800 sq. ft. vivarium.
