The Community Center of St. Matthew's

Description

In the spring of 1999, St. Matthew's members looked ahead to the 21 st Century by renewing their commitment to outreach ministry. This plan included a $ 1.2 million Capital Fund Appeal for the purpose of restoration of the building next door to be used as a community outreach center.

St. Matthew's sits in the heart of inner city Charleston, South Carolina, where our neighbors range from the affluent to families struggling to survive. Members recognized this need and undertook a mission to serve God's people in our community by connecting families with available resources.

Mission Statement:

In 1840, the founders of St. Matthew's German Evangelical Lutheran

Church wrote:

"We are resolved to support those who are in need and stand ready to do everything within our means to improve their lot."

To that historic principle and following Christ's example of unconditional love for all, the Community Center of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church serves our community by addressing the needs of the whole person. The center offers comfort, guidance, and encouragement to enhance the lives and well-being of God's people, as we continue to serve Christ from the heart of the historic city.
