Mission Statement

Founded in 1981, Dance Theatre Etcetera has been an important vehicle for the production of inter-disciplinary, site-specific events, educational programs and community events designed and conceived by Martha Bowers, Executive Director. DTE has produced major site-specific works for the Red Hook waterfront and other national and international locations. Each multi-disciplinary project involves an extensive residency in a host community, research and includes educational components. Collaborating community members and students are integrated into the casts that include world-renowned dancers, actors, musicians, composers and visual designers.

Description

DTE is well known for its artistic and educational programs for youth. The Company has been involved in the creation and implementation of arts education projects in numerous schools in New York City , including the Brooklyn International H.S. where Ms. Bowers has served as an Artist in Residence since 1994 and the South Brooklyn Community High School in Red Hook, Brooklyn . Her work has been recognized with a BAXten Award in Arts Education and six New York Foundation for the Arts Artist in the School Community grants .

Premised on the belief that the arts are an effective vehicle for social transformation, Dance Theatre Etcetera focuses on the "invisible choreography" that unites artists and community members as co-creators in cultural activities. Through performances, festivals, parades and arts education programs, DTE utilizes the arts to encourage individual expression and active participation in civic life.
