Mission Statement

The Iowa Volunteer Mentor Program moblizes volunteer mentors who guide and coach PROMISE JOBS participants (public assistance recipients) to become self-reliant through individual growth, job retention, and economic stability.

Description

Following a prescreening process, volunteer mentor candidates participate in an orientation and training session. Trained mentors are then matched with participants (persons receiving public assistance). Once matched, the mentor and participant, with the help of the volunteer mentor coordinator, will decide on the length of the relationship, what to accomplish, and how often to meet. The confidential relationship that develops between the participant and the mentor is a partnership and is designed for the mentor to be a coach, resource person, guide, and friend to the participant. In return, the mentoring relationship allows the volunteer mentor to develop his/her skills in the areas of coaching, relationship-building, consulting, and teaching.
