The Public Library is dedicated to free and equal access to information, knowledge, independent lifelong learning, cultural enrichment, and the joys of reading for our diverse community. Among the many services we offer, NBPL, through Project Adult Literacy (PAL) provides tutoring to help improve the literacy skill of adults in the area to empower them to achieve success in their lives - at home, at work and in the community.

Description

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities' information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.

I love the NBPL Adult Literacy Program. Their tutor training is thorough and efficient, and I learned what I need to know to help adult learners most effectively. The program takes care to match learners and tutors in such a way that the relationship benefits both. I am impressed by the program's comprehensive strategy; they offer book clubs and writing classes to their learners. To see an organization fulfill such a need with such care enlivens my faith in humanity.
