The Public Library is dedicated to free and equal access to information, knowledge, independent lifelong learning, cultural enrichment, and the joys of reading for our diverse community.
Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities' information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
I’ve been volunteering at the Orange Public Library for one year. I find it to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience which allows me to support an institution that is patronized and enjoyed by people who live in the City of Orange and beyond. Volunteering at the Welcome Desk gives me the opportunity to provide assistance and direction to patrons in utilizing all the services the library has to offer. The personal contact and interaction I experience while volunteering at the library is quite gratifying. I believe the time and service to the library I provide is appreciated by the library staff and its patrons.
Volunteer work at the Orange Public Library is a very gratifying experience for several reasons. First, as a volunteer, I am endorsing, supporting and helping to facilitate cultural literacy among the American public.
Secondly, it is a great way to give back to the public library system in general, an institution which has, for over a hundred years, offered the public a world of free learning.
Thirdly, it is simply a fun, easy way to serve my fellow man, which is the primary goal of all volunteerism.
Lastly, as a Welcome Desk volunteer at OPL, I'm given the opportunity to hone and develop my interpersonal and social skills.
In a nutshell, volunteerism with OPL is a Win Win situation.
