Mission Statement

The mission of Sun24 is to replace filthy kerosene lamps used by hundreds of millions of people with clean solar lights. 1.3 billion people have no electricity. Most use filthy kerosene lamps that are unhealthy, dangerous, expensive (for fuel) and GREATLY contribute to climate change. Replacing kerosene lamps has been described as "low-hanging fruit in the climate world."

Description

Sun24 partners with he Catholic Church in Africa to distribute $4 solar lights. Sun24 donates the lights and parish priest enthusiastically distribute them to Catholics and non-Catholics. Need, not creed. The lights are distributed to the poorest of poor in the most remote regions in sub-Saharan Africa.

Over the lifetime of the $4 solar light, each kerosene lamp that is replaced results in 1.8 tonnes of CO2e mitigated, 4.4 people benefiting, 2.1 people without lung or eye disease, $168 saved in fuel costs and 520 hours extra study time.

At $2.22 per tonne of CO2e mitigated, this may be among the most cost-effective climate mitigation projects.
