Food Distribution Volunteers

Help load shopping carts and vehicles with groceries during our public food distributions every Tuesday 9:00 AM-11:30 AM. Why: With volunteer support, Heart of Compassion currently provides loads of groceries for more than 400 families weekly at our public food distributions. Who: Heart of Compassion is dedicated to being a lighthouse of hope and help for Montebello and our local communities. We rely on our valuable volunteers to help us achieve our mission of Fighting Hunger and Feeding Hope. What to Expect: Volunteers are responsible for gently handling food products, such as bagged fruits and vegetables Load groceries into shopping carts and/or vehicles during our public food distributions Volunteers must follow safety directions Volunteers are responsible for following their team leader's directions and having a positive attitude Volunteers must also be flexible if asked to work in a different area What's Required: Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to help with our public food distributions Volunteers must wear a safety vest (provided if needed) Wear closed-toed shoes and wear modest clothing (gloves are provided if needed) Check-in and out with the office every day they volunteer Be willing to stand/walk for long periods, Let the office know if they cannot attend their scheduled shift. Food Recovery Volunteers

Volunteer with Heart of Compassion and ensure that good food does not go to waste! Why: Volunteering in food recovery can contribute to millions of pounds of food being saved from a landfill. Food will be recovered, sorted through, and distributed to about 400 families in need. Who: Heart of Compassion's mission is to be a lighthouse of volunteers fighting poverty and restoring hope What to Expect: Safely bag and prepare food products, such as produce, canned or boxed goods, for our public distributions. Assemble cardboard boxes. Ensure organic waste and plastic waste are discarded properly and separately. What's Required: Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes and comfortable attire to handle a lot of movement. Minimum age requirement is 13 with a signed waiver and chaperone present. A free Back to School Backpack Giveaway Event for the community! Come out and help us distribute lunch, food boxes, and backpacks at this event. Why: Help lower-income families in local communities get the supplies they need for their children to start the new school year! Volunteers are required to be flexible and willing to listen to instructions. Volunteers may need to stand for long periods of time. Description

Heart of Compassion is dedicated to being a lighthouse of hope and help for Montebello and our local communities. We rely on our valuable volunteers to help us achieve our mission of Fighting Hunger and Feeding Hope. We currently provide loads of groceries for about 600 families weekly at our public food distributions.

Mondays 9a.m.-12p.m.: volunteers needed to bag produce
Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8-11a.m.: volunteers needed to register recipients
Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9a.m.-12p.m.: volunteers needed to load groceries into shopping carts and recipient vehicles

I've been volunteering at Heart of Compassion for 2 months. There are a number of different areas to assist in, including registration, bagging fruits and vegetables, loading groceries into recipients' vehicles, and office work. Volunteering there is a great way to help the local community with their physical needs.

First time volunteering at this organization. They have provided Thanksgiving lunch, and other free services for the people in need, e.g. hair cut, which is really good. As for volunteer perspective, there is a problem with lack of instruction from organizers. Shopping carts that filled with food for people in need isn't enough, making the rest of the volunteer standing around doing nothing. This year's volunteer has way too many young people from high school which made it difficult to team with since they will stop and do nothing without giving any instruction.
