Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT: To increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another through the support of local United Way Agencies.

Description

HISTORY:

1. The United Way movement began as a combined effort of religious charity organizations in 1887.

2. Jefferson County United Way began as The Community Chest of Steubenville in 1931. It was organized by the Steubenville Chamber of Commerce to address depression-era needs through support of ten local agencies.

3. In 1976 came a name change to Steubenville Area United Way and in 1983 a merger occurred with another name change to the United Way of Jefferson County .

4. The merger that occurred resulted in Toronto Community Chest and Mingo Community Chest becoming grandfather agencies of the United Way of Jefferson County .

5. Traditionally a workplace fundraising organization with high visibility and community respect.

6. Currently helps support twenty-seven member agencies through monthly allocation checks.
