Mission Statement

WSCS provides opportunities for residents of all ages to enhance outcomes in education, financial capability, health & wellness and prevention. Programming is supported by funding focused on developing community-based support for crime reduction, seniors aging in place, minimizing the impact of substance abuse and violence, and positive youth development. Programming reflects a lifespan approach to providing services with a special emphasis on activities that 1) enhance engagement with adults & familes, 2) provide afterschool and weekend enrichment that fosters academic/emotional/physical development for at-risk kids & teens, and 3) meet basic needs of esteem, friendship, safety and socialization for seniors that keep them fully integrated in the community.

Description

WSCS is solidly embedded in the upper West Side of Buffalo, serving neighborhoods that are highly diverse by employment, ethnicity, income & race. A community-based board provides oversight to the executive director who in turn manages a staff that is highly diverse by age, ethnicity, gender and race. The building provides meeting space for a range of groups from birthday parties to block clubs, and a co-working space for entreprenurial developent and ESL technology; regularly scheduled activities and programs include morning socialization & transportation for seniors, afterschool enrichment for at-risk kids and teens, and guided health & wellness participation. Those same activities, fundraising, and programs provide a wide range of opportunites to volunteering.
