Mission Statement

CIVIC is the national visitation network, which is working to end U.S.immigration detention. We monitor human rights abuses, elevate stories, build community-based alternatives to detention, and advocate for system change.

Description

Since 2009, CIVIC has spearheaded the U.S. immigration detention visitation movement, helping to grow the cadre of visitor volunteers from under 100 at 4 facilities to over 1,400 at over immigration detention facilities today. The heart of our work is immigration detention visitation programs. These programs connect people in detention to a volunteer who visits them weekly, providing them with a connection to outside resources, while also holding space for them. For a few minutes each week in the visitation booth, detained immigrants know they are safe and not forgotten. Our ability to monitor detention conditions, develop successful alternatives to detention, and advocate for change is possible because of the relationships being built between people in detention and those on the outside.
