Cantare’s mission is to foster a diverse community of compassion and understanding across generational, cultural and economic boundaries through the beauty and power of choral music. Cantare Con Vivo (To Sing With Life) is an inter-generational choral music organization that engages participants from ages 5 to 80 from Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Cantare inspires people to live in harmony, treating one another with dignity. Our vision is all encompassing and is reflected in the music selected and performed, and in our efforts to engage audiences through the power of music presented at the highest musical standards.
Cantare ConVivo is the only organization to bring tuition-free choral music residencies to Title 1 (under-served) K-12 children in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). We serve approximately 3,000 K-5 students at 8 OUSD elementary schools through weekly In-School Classes (12- and 32-week residencies) and through an After-School Choir program (32-week residencies). In order to facilitate and remove geographic boundaries, students learn the fundamentals of choral singing and music theory, and perform in a variety of styles and languages including Hebrew, Xhosa, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin, Arabic, Tagalog and Japanese. Reaching nearly 9000 Oakland students to date our music and education program has been recognized both in 2005 and 2014 as a program of excellence and impact through Chorus America’s Education and Community Engagement Award.Cantare’s acclaimed 110-voice symphonic Chorale and its 24-voice Chamber Ensemble offer seven different concert programs annually that are both affordable and accessible. The choirs have become known for their eclectic repertoire and high standards of musical excellence, and have performed over 130 different concert programs, presenting more than 1,500 compositions, including numerous major choral/orchestral works. Our choirs perform for more than 4,000-5,000 adults and children each year in the East Bay.
