Mission Statement

The mission of BFA is to enrich lives, educate and inspire youth, provide training opportunities, enhance appreciation of the arts, and support emerging artists. We do this by presenting great works of classic Latino/Hispanic literature to low income and underprivileged Southern California students and families. These works are of outstanding literary merit containing stories which are important to our community, reflect our lives, and reveal our common relationships and diverse humanity. Now in its 36 th year of operation, BFA has presented over 200 plays on its mainstage, toured schools with educational theatre, presented scholarships, and touched the lives of over 2 million people. BFA has also held special events and collaborations with LATC, UCLA and the Alex Theatre. We are the only full-time professional bilingual theater on the west coast of the United States.

Description

We create, commission, produce, and perform new English translations to major Spanish language plays, thus making this literature available to non-Spanish speaking audiences. We host 4 mainstage productions annually presented in Spanish and English independently. BFA presents classic works from writers such as Federico Garcia Lorca, Fernando de Rojas, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Miguel de Cervantes, Jose Zorilla, and Calderon de la Barca to name a few. We are the largest employer of Latino/Hispanic theater arts, providing professional training and work for more than 100 artists, directors, playwrights, translators, musicians, and technicians annually. BFA works with Los Angeles Unified School District to select works that are incompliance with the educational curriculum. We serve 40,000+ adults and children each year, many for whom theater is a new experience .
