Mission Statement
The Urban Forestry Corps is a continuation of a successful program that started in summer 2008 in which SCA had a crew of six Seattle area students working in Seward Park, Washington Park Arboretum, and Cheasty Greenspace. SCA's Urban Forestry Corps engages young adults in hands-on environmental conservation projects critical to the restoration and stewardship of urban forests in Seattle. The program provides the opportunity to learn conservation and leadership skills while contributing to the preservation of Seattle parks. In summer 2008, the Corps worked for eight weeks at Seward Park, Washington Park Arboretum, and Cheasty Greenspace on Beacon Hill. The program was in collaboration with Seattle Parks and Recreation and the University of Washington Botanic Gardens with a $10,000 grant from the Cascade Land Conservancy. In 2009, the Cascade Land Conservancy is supporting the program with a $75,000 grant for work to be done in a variety of Seattle parks including Cheasty Greenspace, Madrona Woods, and Maple School Ravine.
