Mission Statement

American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description

What is Relay For Life? A community based event that brings together the people in the community for a comm.on goal of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. People from all ages are welcomed to participate.

Ø It's a 24-hour team event to fight cancer.

Ø It is not a race!

Ø A team captain gets together 10 friends, family members, co-workers, etc. and creates a team.

Ø Next...team members collect contributions prior to the event.

Ø Then, come Relay Day...everyone grabs their tents and lawn chairs and head to Relay For Life. It's a community camp-out!

Ø At the event, you'll experience a Cancer Survivor's Lap, the Luminaria Ceremony and lots of food, fun and entertainment!

Money raised through this event supports the programs of the American Cancer Society.

CELEBRATE- Survivors & Caregivers

The event begins with a special tribute to all cancer survivors. Anyone who has battled cancer is invited to join together and walk the opening lap of the ceremony. This inspires the rest of us to begin our walk towards a cure!

REMEMBER - Luminaria Ceremony

As dusk approaches, the Relay remembers and honors all those who have fought their battle with cancer. Hundreds of candlelit luminaria bags line the track - each dedicated to a special loved one. Silence falls upon the crowd as each name is read aloud. The luminaries burn through the night, lighting the track for walkers as they continue their relay.

FIGHT BACK- Fight Back Ceremony

Make a pledge to fight cancer everyday of the year and leave the event feeling strong, empowered and hopeful.

Why a 24-hour Relay Event?

As we participant in the fight to cure cancer, we remember people living with cancer fight the disease each day, 24 hours a day. Teams dedicated a 24 hour commitment in solidarity with all cancer patients.
