Description
Get involved in the Washington, DC community, use your personal and professional sklls to help homeless veterans get back on their feet.
At FareShare ( www.faresharedc.org), our mission is to provide transportation assistance to homeless veterans of the U.S. armed forces in the Washington, DC metro area. Since 2005 we have provided over $175,000 in metro cards to veterans. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit and an all-volunteer organization. Because we have no paid employees, and minimal overhead costs, 98% of the money we raise goes directly to veterans.
We collect used metro cards from tourists and business travelers via collection boxes at area hotels. We have a partnership with WMATA which enables us to consolidate the thousands of cards we collect onto hundreds of plastic SmarTrip cards denominations of $30 each. We work with case workers at leading homeless services organizations to distribute the cards to veterans who need them. Our distribution partners include Miriam’s Kitchen, Pathways to Housing DC, and U.S. Vets.
Veterans use the cards we donate to get training, get medical care, look for work, and commute to their jobs. As we continue to grow, we are looking to recruit additional volunteers. Feel free to contact us directly with any questions or if you would like additional information.
