Mission Statement

The mission of The PEGASUS RISING Project is to partner horses and humans for healing.

Description

Pegasus Rising rescued a family of neglected Polish Arabians and has repurposed the herd to pay it forward by assisting in the emotional healing of combat veterans and their families struggling to reorient and integrate back into their civilian and family lives. Experiential in nature, participants learn by interacting with the herd members on the ground, rather than through riding, teaching how they can successfully approach challenges and better understand and relate to themselves and others.

In excess of 60 volunteers have come on board to assist on this project. Unpaid volunteers care for this special family of horses mornings and evenings daily.

As caretakers, our job is to muck out the pens and feed and water the horses. It takes 1-2 hours based on the number of people on the shift and the weather. Although it’s helpful, you don’t need experience with horses to volunteer…. What you do need though, is the ability to follow instructions and complete tasks without hand-holding or constant praise. If you need constant validation of how appreciated you are, this is not the non-profit for you to volunteer with. I love the horses. I know their personalities and quirks. I love the quiet at the barn early in the morning and the manual labor required to show my love to these wonderful testaments to survival.

I have volunteered with animal rescues for years - this is by far my favorite! It's very well run and organized; the stables are clean and the horses are well taken care of (go volunteer team!). I can tell that all of the other volunteers truly care. I highly recommend Pegasus. It's extremely rewarding and I'm so happy I found it.
