Mission Statement

Orleans Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry.

Habitat welcomes all people--regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or any other difference--to build simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter.

Our Habitat affiliate works locally in Orleans County, NY to select and support homeowners, organize volunteers and coordinate house building.

Homeowners are selected based on their need for housing, their ability to repay a mortgage and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat.

Habitat is able to make housing affordable to low-income families because:

* Houses are sold through a no-profit mortgage
* Individuals, corporations, faith groups and others provide vital financial support
* Homeowners and volunteers build under trained supervision

Description

We are a 100% volunteer, official affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International established in the summer of 1992 with stated mission of building one house per year to help alleviate inadequate housing in Orleans County, one of the poorest counties in New York State.

Habitat "homeowner partners" work side-by-side with local volunteers to complete 300 hours of "sweat-equity" before moving into their new homes. After moving in, the homeowners begin payments on his/her mortgage and taxes with a no-interest loan from Orleans Habitat for Humanity, Inc. The mortgage money is then used to build more Habitat homes.
