We seek to enrich the lives of young people from under-resourced communities while they help prepare abandoned shelter dogs for permanent homes.
K9 Youth Alliance (K9YA) partners with local youth service providers and animal shelters to bring young people and homeless dogs together for experience-based learning and enrichment.
K9YA students develop important life skills and build transformative bonds with their canine partners, their peers and our staff. K9YA dogs learn basic behaviors and receive much-needed socialization that reduces stress, helps them impress potential adopters and eases their transition to a permanent home.
Each program serves six teens and a minimum of six dogs. Program sessions run M-F, two hours a day for three weeks. Each program culminates in a "public" graduation ceremony, where students give a brief presentation and run their dogs through a short agility course.
