With the implementation of the new strategic plan, CAPI's vision is that:All refugees and immigrants lead successful lives and exercise fully their civic rights and responsibilities. In addition the new mission is: To guide refugees and immigrants in their journey toward self determination and social equality. With the organization's new direction, we have developed two important goals to lead our strategies. One is to eliminate social injustices and gender inequality for refugees and immigrants. The second is to sustain financial stability, transparency, and strength.
CAPI was founded in 1982 by a coalition of church groups as a food shelf catering to Asian food preferences to serve refugees arriving from Southeast Asia in the aftermath of the Vietnam conflict. The organization's scope has always been multicultural, beginning as Pan-Asian, and since 2000, expanding its client group to include more recent African refugee groups. CAPI is headquartered in South Minneapolis, and also provides services in four Metro locations including Sabathani Community Center (Asian food shelf), Penn Avenue (Employment Counselors are accessible to their North Minneapolis clientele), Eden Prairie Mall (Employment Counselors available bi- weekly) and North Community High School (School Navigator).
