Would you recommend Brevard County Guardian ad Litem?
If you've ever felt sad thinking about kids in foster care or are horrified when you read stories in the news about child abuse, but feel like you couldn't possibly do anything to help ... please consider getting more information about this program! You DON'T have to have a specialized skill set or a back ground in social services. You really just need to care about children and about giving them a voice. The Guardian ad Litem Program gives you all the training & continued support you will need to become a volunteer advocate. There are dedicated, caring professionals who will guide you and work with you as a team. The truth is though, there just aren't enough volunteers for the # of kids coming into the system. When I signed up in 2012, I was worried I didn't have anything to offer these children. You would be surprised how just seeing a child on a monthly basis, listening, and following up on concerns or needs makes! You can absolutely be that person for a child and make a difference!
I've been a volunteer for the Guardian ad Litem program for over 8 years. My volunteer work includes advocating for abused children in the community and in court. As a volunteer, you can give back to your community and give a child a brighter future. Volunteers ensure abused and neglected children have a voice; provide kids in foster care with a consistent adult role model; and provide emotional support for children going through a period of uncertainty in their lives. We also have a staff person and an attorney who we can go to for advice. I feel the work that I do really makes a difference for a child and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to work with kids.
The guardian ad litem program is a wonderful program that supports the children in the dependency system. You don't need any special skills or experience to become a GAL, they have an incredibly thorough training program as well as mentors available to help you when you first get started. I've been a GAL for over a year now and I find it very rewarding and the children I've met and advocated for are just incredible and resilient.
The Guardian ad Litem organization is extremely organized and provides excellent support to its volunteers. I've been a Guardian ad Litem volunteer for 2 1/2 years and it is the most rewarding 'job' I've ever had. There are way too many children in our county that need an advocate, so the more people we can get to help them, the better their lives will be.
