Mission Statement

The mission of Columbus Schools Special Olympics (CSSO) is to provide year-around sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness and demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other athletes and the community.

Description

Columbus Schools Special Olympics serves athletes ranging in ages 8-47. We have an In-School program currently in 50 schools, elementary through high. The athletes train and compte in two sports, basketball (skills and team) and athletics (track & field). Everything that takes place happens during school hours. There is also an evening program (Columbus Comets) in which the athletes have a choice of 12 sports they can train and compete. Athletes have an opportunity to compete at a local, area/section, state, national and world game level.

Columbus Schools relys on volunteers which are the backbone of the program. Volunteers can help in a variety of ways; coach a sport (12 sports year round), volunteer at an event (daytime, evening and weekend), help plan an event, volunteer with fundraisers, take pictures at events and obtain marketing and corporate support.
