Mission Statement

Founded in 1944, the Palm Beach Civic Association is a grassroots volunteer organization of civic-minded individuals dedicated to the purposes that follow: To protect and enhance the special quality of life in Palm Beach. To encourage residents to take an active interest in town affairs. To promote political responsibility through education and advocacy of public policy. To support local government in its efforts to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of governmental services. We believe that democracy depends on informed and active participation of citizens in government. When citizens fail to participate meaningfully in government, democracy is endangered. Thus, our goal is to encourage informed residents to participate in town affairs, thereby encouraging local government that is responsive and accountable to residents needs. We seek to address long-term strategic challenges to our quality of life at every level of government, from town, county, and state to federal. To implement our mission and goals, the Civic Association draws on the skills and experience of its members as well as those of recognized experts. We follow all town council meetings; study issues of community concern; and work to educate residents through public forums, meetings, surveys and publications. We also serve as an available resource for town officials in assisting them in their decision-making on major issues. The Civic Association is nonpartisan. We sponsor candidate debates, but do not support or oppose any candidate for public office. We take positions on selected local governmental issues, but strive to work in a cooperative and constructive spirit with other civic and public organizations as well as with our town's public officials.

Description

Founded in 1944, the Palm Beach Civic Association has grown to almost 2,000 members in a community of 8,000 year 'round residents. A prestigious board of 120 directors guides this active community organization. More than 90 Palm Beach businesses support Civic Association efforts as corporate sponsors. Four staff members work full time to serve the membership. The Civic Association is devoted to keeping residents aware and educated on the critical issues facing Palm Beach - from matters of local significance, such as public safety and shore protection, to those that go beyond town borders, but threaten the community. A well-informed, alert citizens' organization, the Civic Association mobilizes its members and takes action whenever necessary to protect Palm Beach. Preserving the island's quality of life is the heart of the group's mission. Through timely publications, bulletins and updates; stimulating forums, receptions, and community-wide events; and meetings with elected officials, consultants, and town staff, the Palm Beach Civic Association plays an important role in preserving and enhancing this exceptional island community.
