We are currently seeking qualified professionals that would like to offer pet therapy services to individuals on hospice in Hartford, Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield, Tolland, and/or Middlesex Counties. Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice team, as they contribute to the quality of life and fulfillment each patient experiences in their final days. If you are certified/licensed to provide pet therapy services and would like to gift some very special people with your presence and passion, please review the requirements below and apply to your preferred location. Volunteer Training- All volunteers receive free training at a local office or virtually. Health Screening and Background Check- All required testing and screening is paid for by Compassus. Time Commitment- Minimum of 6 months to 1 year commitment. Whether you give two hours a month or six hours a week, all efforts are appreciated and needed. Compassus will work around your schedule. We are seeking volunteers that would be able to visit our patients in Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield, Tolland, Middlesex, and Hartford Counties. Compassus volunteers make a positive difference in the lives of our patients. As we serve a vast area of Connecticut, we match volunteers with patients close to their home. Many of our patients live in skilled nursing facilities, but we also serve those being cared for in their private homes. Volunteers help our patients by providing them support through simple companionship, reading to them, playing music, watching TV, and most importantly listening to their life story. We ask that our volunteers commit to working at least two hours a month. Volunteers may make their visits flexible to fit their schedule Monday-Sunday during the hours of 8:00am-8:00pm. The length of visit times will vary depending on the needs of the patients. WE ARE IN SPECIAL NEED OF PET THERAPISTS, MUSIC THERAPIST, MUSICIANS, LICENSED HAIRSTYLIST/BARBER, AND LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPISTS WHO CAN SHARE THEIR TALENTS WITH OUR PATIENTS. WE ARE ALSO IN NEED OF PEOPLE WHO WOULD KNIT/CROCHET PRAYER SHAWLS AND/OR BLANKETS FOR OUR PATIENTS. Veteran volunteers are important because they are able to form a camaraderie with veteran patients that can help eliminate the stoicism and secrecy that veteran patients often develop from having served in the military. A few ways veteran volunteers can help- assist veterans in reminiscing/telling life stories, make friendly visits, take part in pinning ceremonies or distribute certificates for Veterans Day and other events, read to patients, and/or run errands when needed.
