Just One Person's "Education Beyond Academics" programs expand rural Kenyan high school girls' visions for their futures and prepares them to participate equally in the social and economic development of their country.
We have forged a partnership between Just One Person, the girls, their parents and school administrators and staff that not only creates a network that ensures the girls succeed, but also builds program sustainability in the community from the ground up.
We believe that to achieve a lasting impact on the issue of women's empowerment, a new generation of Kenyan women must be prepared to overcome the tradtional and cultural barriers that limit their choices and perpetuate the cycle of poverty.
We are not a scholarship program. We are currently the only program providing services for girls in the densely populated and isolated rural Western Province of Kenya. We provide life skills workshops, computer training, financial management training and career preparation for secondary school girls at residential camps and workshops.
While we do provide some financial support for girls' school fees, parents and guardians are required to contribute as well. Our unique and innovative "Family Mpowerment Program" provides entrepreneurship training to JOP members' parents so that they may
1) generate income to meet their financial responsibilities for supporting their daughter's education
2) recognize immediate and visible benefit derived from the education of their daughters
3) have means to become role models - in particular the women - to their daughters and other girls in their villages.
