Emmanuel Uniten Methodist Church (EUMC), incorporated in 1893, strives to be a welcoming church with meaningful worship, to help members grow in their relarionships with each oher and God, and to be intentionally involved in ministry to each other, and through outreach programs, to our surrounding communities and the world.
One of our newer outreach efforts is an English as a Second Language (ESL) program, which was initiated in response to the recent large influx of hispanic/latino, asian and other minority populations into the Beltsville area. The goal of our program is to serve our new neighbors by offering opportunities to improve their skills in the use of the English language, and thus empower them to be full participants in our society. All classes are held at EUMC. They are offered on Tuesday evenings, 7 to 9 pm, at low literacy, literacy, intermediate and advanced levels, and are taught by trained volunteer teachers. We are currently completing our second full year of classes (started in the fall of '07), and are looking for ways to improve and expand our program. We have averaged about 40 registring students each fall and spring semester.
