Mission Statement

The Rochester Literacy Movement, a public-private partnership led by the Rochester Education and Literacy (R.E.A.L.) Commission, is a Movement launched by Mayor Robert J. Duffy as a response to the realities of job losses and juvenile crime rates. Too many Rochesterians lack the ability to be competitive in the job market because they read below a basic level and too few of our youth achieve academic standards which will prepare them for life as citizens and members of the workforce. During this year as we celebrate the 175th anniversary of the City's founding, the Rochester Literacy Movement must support and accelerate the work already begun by committed community literacy partners to reverse these disturbing trends.

Description

The Rochester Literacy Movement supports Rochesterians in need of services by offering our partner agencies increased visibility, access to the expertise of other providers, increased capacity for networking and partnerships, opportunities to share resources, increased connection with volunteers, and the ability to prevent duplication of services. Through increased knowledge of best practices and more efficient sharing of scarce resources, agencies can better their ability to fight illiteracy in the City of Rochester.
