The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. A monument not only of stone and mortar but of human determination and endurance, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument symbolizes the clash between cultures which ultimately resulted in our uniquely unified nation. Still resonant with the struggles of an earlier time, these original walls provide tangible evidence of America’s grim but remarkable history.
Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is one of the most popular visitor attractions in St. Augustine, FL. It sees roughly three quarters of a million people pass through its gates every year. The park offers interpretive programming throughout each day, museum exhibit panels in the the rooms, a 15-minute movie on the fort's history, Junior Ranger programs for kids, and historic weapons demonstrations on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Many of these programs rely heavily on volunteer participation, especially the historic weapons demonstsrations. The park also includes Fort Matanzas National Monument, 14 miles south of the Castillo on A1A, which encompasses an historic watchtower and roughly 300 acres of nature preserve.
