Mission Statement

Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts (LVSCM) believes in the power of literacy to transform lives, economically elevate families, and create more equitable communities. We provide free, confidential and individualized tutoring in basic literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to adults who cannot or will not attend classroom programs for a variety of reasons. These adults are the most in need of instruction, the hardest to reach and the hardest to serve.

Description

Since 1975, Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts (formerly knows as Literacy Volunteers of the Tri-Community) has provided free, confidential, and individualized tutoring services to adults in basic literacy (BL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Tutoring is provided by professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors. Adult learners and tutors work one-on-one at a time and at a public place that is mutually convenient.

LVSCM is an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM), the state's leading provider of literacy tutoring for adults, and is one of the network's 12 affiliate programs throughout the state. LVSCM is the only program in the South-Central Massachusetts region to provide these vital services. We primarily serve the towns of Southbridge, Sturbridge, Charlton, Webster, and Dudley, though there is no residency or citizenship requirement to receive services.
