The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford is to create a community of fully literate adults through student centered instruction that catalyzes career readiness and advancement.
Since 1972, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford has helped over 10,000 adults from across our region to improve their reading, writing, and English speaking skills. Each year, our 200 volunteer tutors work with nearly 900 adult students in small-group classes using a nationally-recognized curriculum. LVGH recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to provide English literacy instruction to over 850 adults each year. We offer small group classes in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at our Hartford Literacy Center, ESOL instruction at our Wickham Literacy Center in East Hartford, and Basic Literacy at the Prosser Public Library - Wintonbury Branch in Bloomfield. LVGH also offers Computer Literacy, U.S. Citizenship, Writing, Math Literacy, Pre-GED, GED, and other classes based on our students' needs and interests.
