Mission Statement

Since 1990, the Volunteer Action Center has worked to identify Rockland County's community needs and secure volunteers to meet them. We support volunteerism in the belief that it is one aspect of a caring community and that it helps increase connections among people in our society.

Part of a national network of more than 400 such organizations, the Volunteer Action Center connects volunteers with Rockland agencies that serve the elderly, the children, the hungry, the disabled -- as well as with the arts, museums and other non-profit organizations.

The Volunteer Action Center also supports and assists corporate groups looking for project venues.. It works with them to identify employee interests and matches these interests with the non-profit organizations that need volunteer help.

Description

Groups
We help corporate and social volunteer groups locate agencies that are looking for occasional public service. These are usually one-time, one-day events and may include a benefit, a county fair, a clean-up day or other events of that nature.

Chore
We operate a Chore program that provides free "handyman" services to the elderly and the disabled of all ages.
Chore volunteers do minor home repairs that don't require professionals. They hang pictures or mini blinds, replace light bulbs, install and remove screens and storm windows.

Using a small van equipped with essential tools, the Chore crew makes scheduled calls to tackle these small tasks that the elderly or those with disability can't handle. The crew completes at least five calls a day on two days a week.

Chore often refers clients to the Weatherization And Repairs Program (WRAP).

Weatherization and Repairs
WRAP tackles larger repairs such as the installation of a new roof or heating system WRAP clients must meet income requirements while Chore clients do not.

I have used this volunteer service a number of times for my elderly Mother who is in her 90's. the volunteers are very professional, and knowledgeable in the services they provide, as well as providing conversation!
