Description
We are a new nonprofit that is working to create a multi-use recreation area at a former landfill. We're a membership-driven, all-volunteer organization that seeks to build our community by creating a fenced dog park where dogs, their guardians, and others can socialize and play. In addition to the dog park, we want to create a cross-country trail, picnic areas, and possibly a children's playground.
Our town has only three tiny, rarely used public parks. By transforming the 13-acre former landfill into recreation space, including a dog park, we will not only greatly increase the recreation opportunities available to residents, we will also create the first dog park in the area. The landfill was closed and capped more than 20 years ago and has been essentially wasted space since then. Several other former landfills in Massachusetts have been transformed into parks, including Danehy Park in Cambridge and Spectacle Island in the Boston Harbor.
Unlike in other parts of the country, dog parks are uncommon in Massachusetts. MayDOG is part of a state-wide coalition of dog owners groups that is trying to create these highly desireable community amenities throughout the state.
