Mission Statement

The Sanctuaries harnesses the power of the creative arts to transform two of the most divisive issues of our time -- race and religion -- into positive forces for personal growth and social transformation.

Description

Founded in our nation’s capital in 2013, The Sanctuaries is a racially and religiously diverse community of 100 amateur and semi-professional artists working across artistic media, from spoken word poetry to hip hop to screenprinting. Artists gather monthly to build lasting friendships; join Arts Teams to improve their craft and collaborate with others; and share their artistic and spiritual voices with the wider city at large events throughout the year. Through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, small businesses, and religious congregations across the city and beyond, our artists also live out their commitment to justice-making by contributing original art to social movements that would otherwise be unable to secure such support.

Our pioneering work has been documented by CBS and featured in the New York Times . To learn more and see samples of our art, visit our website .
