The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
Jewish Family Service of Orange County empowers all people facing challenging times to live with dignity, hope, and strength.
Our services include our Friendly Visitor Program which connects home-bound seniors and medically challenged adults with volunteers who provide transportation to and from medical care, grocery shopping assistance, and companionship visits; case management to connect older adults and those medially fragile with available community supports, emergency assistance including a bilingual outreach coordinator for food stamps, service coordination and social programs for intellectually challenged adults, social programs for families with children with special needs, a therapeutic summer camp, and counseling on a sliding scale.
I got in touch with them and was told I needed to attend a training before volunteering (I think it was a 6-hour training - mostly signing papers) We filled out papers with what we were and were not interested in. I wanted to be a home companion, and specifically wrote that I did not want to drive seniors because I was concerned about them possibly getting hurt getting into and out of the car. So the first (and only) job that they called me for: to drive a woman to her dr appointment. I did it anyway and it went well. After that I didn't receive any more calls. I even reached out to them several times and told them to please get in touch if they needed volunteers for anything and I didn't hear back unless it was for something I told them previously that I was uncomfortable doing. This was about 6 years ago, and I still get a holiday card from them and an invitation to the volunteer dinner (I dont attend), even though I haven't gotten a call from them in years about volunteering.
