Mission Statement

SplashPad.org's primary mission is to help maintain the neighborhood park that was designed by award-winning Landscape Architect Walter Hood and also to serve as an advocate on its behalf. Since we are part of a much larger community, we also continue to support and advocate on behalf of the adjacent commercial district.

Description

SplashPad.org was founded in late 1999 with the express purpose of convincing the City of Oakland to dramatically improve a blighted park that was never intended for public use. The new park opened in 2003 as the home for the Grand Lake Farmers Market and as the centerpiece for a commercial district that has experienced a remarkable revival in the ensuing years.

Just prior to the park's opening, community volunteers planted a large California Native Plant Garden that we have continued to maintain and more recently, to expand. While this our major focus, we also assist to some extent with maintenance throughout the park.

SplashPad.org is a registered non-profit thanks to a fiscal sponsorship from the Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation.
