Mission Statement

The Compeer Program of San Mateo County seeks to diminish the loneliness and isolation experienced by individuals in the wake of mental llness and seeks to assist in the recovery process by providing supported one-to-one friendships.

Compeer matches community volunteers in supportive friendship relationships with adults receiving mental health treatment. 'Compeer' means a companion who is also a peer or equal. Loneliness, failure, fear and loss of self-esteem are universal experiences of those who suffer from mental illnesses. A caring friend can help restore some joy and hope to a life that is often empty of both. Furthermore, the purpose of the relationship is to improve an individual's sense of belonging and self-esteem, increase his/her social and communication skills and strengthen other positive traits.

Description

Volunteers spend a minimum of 4hours/month with an individual requesting a Compeer friend. Compeer staff recruits, screens, trains and continues to support the volunteer for the duration of the intended friendship. We match our friends by interests, location and preferences.

Come and share some relaxed time with someone in need of a personal friend.
