Mission Statement

The Alameda County Library is a volunteer-based adult literacy program that provides one-to-one and small group literacy instruction to English-speaking Alameda County jail inmates who read and write below the 8th grade level.

Description

Tutoring takes place at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, CA or at the Glenn Dyer Jail facility in Oakland, CA., twice per week for about 1 1/2 hours each session.

Prospective volunteer jail tutors are screened by our staff, and, if invited to join the program, must participate in the required combination of online training and classroom orientation.

This includes training in basic literacy instructional theory and technique, a substantial orientation to the jail environment, and an in-depth discussion of the rules for volunteers who work in a jail.

Thinking about becoming a teacher, and need some experience? Great. We need you.

Just looking for a way to give back to your community? Terrific. We need you, too.

That's the cool thing about our program. NO TEACHING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED!

All you need is an open mind. We'll take care of the rest

(It helps if you love to read, but more importantly, you should believe that everyone deserves to know how.)
