The ALS Therapy Development Institute was formed in 1999 by James Allen Heywood after discovering no treatment options existed for his brother, Stephen, who was diagnosed with ALS at age 29. Today, the ALS Therapy Development Institute and its scientists actively discover and develop treatments for ALS. It is the world's first and largest nonprofit biotech focused 100 percent on ALS research. Led by people with ALS and their families, the Institute understands the urgent need to slow and stop this disease.
