Mission Statement

BirchBark Foundation protects and honors the human-animal bond through financial assistance to vulnerable families faced with unaffordable medical expenses to save the life of a pet, and support for all families with our education and pet loss counseling programs.

Description

Using established criteria, BirchBark Foundation provides financial grants to animal owners who are unable to partially or fully cover the cost of their pet’s emergency or critical care. BirchBark's financial aid program helps low-income pet owners on the Central Coast including Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties. We also provide pet loss grief support to the community and offer educational webinars to pet owners to help them be better advocates for their pets.

In today’s world, many people are experiencing economic challenges. Many issues influence the decisions we make for our pets. They usually fall into the following categories: emotional, historical, spiritual, medical, and financial. When the unexpected cost of treatment to save a loving pet’s life is more than someone can afford, they often have little choice but to consider 'economic euthanasia,’ or to surrender their family pet for adoption. BirchBark Foundation has been created to address this heartbreak and help soften the financial burden while supporting low-income pet owners
